“Dan-kata-zome Ramie Banners in 70 Indigo Shades”
The blue produced each time can be different depending on the condition of the natural indigo vat, so the indigo dyer always focuses on the handling of the dye vats. We do not seek a specific tone but rather set about our work with a general goal in mind. We adjust the time and the number of dips while keeping a close eye on the object being dyed.
The resulting blue of each piece of work is unique. It is the only blue of that moment which embodies its journey from a single indigo seed to a color that speaks to the world. Subtle changes that cannot be seen with the eye nor felt with the skin result in different tones. This is the charm of indigo that deals with nature and the source of our desire to engage with the entireprocess from farm to closet.
Haneda Airport has always kept up with the times throughout its 70-year history. We are celebrating this evolution with the gradation of 70 tones of blue, overlaid by the new logo of Haneda Airport that is dyed with the kata-zome technique.
七十色段型染苧麻垂幕
藍染めは毎回同じ色を出すことができず、染液の扱いに染師は常に力を注ぎます。日々決まった青を求めているわけではなく、大体の狙いを定めた状態で仕事に取り掛かり、染液と染める対象物の状態を見ながら時間と回数を何度も調整して仕上げます。大体の掲げた青から、言い換えればその時だけの青に染まります。目には見えないし肌でも感じることのできない微妙な変化が結果的に色の違いにつながります。それが自然を相手にする藍の魅力であり、畑から全ての工程に触れたくなる思いの源です。
時代の流れと共に常に変化を追い続けた羽田の歴史70年を様々な青を見ることができる70種のグラデーション技法で表現し、羽田空港の新しいロゴのような滑らかで純粋な曲線を型染めで染めあげています。
